Expulsion of the Acadians

The Expulsion of the Acadians was the forced removal by the British of the Acadian people from the Maritime provinces. In all, of approximately 14,000 Acadians in the region 11,500 were deported of which at least 5,000 died of disease, starvation or shipwreck. Their homes were burned and land that they had farmed for decades was given to settlers from New England (Planters).

In 1764 Acadians were officially allowed back into the colony but only in small, isolated groups and if they pledged allegiance to the King. However, in a census taken that year, it was discovered that there were already 2,600 Acadians in the colony, most of them having eluded capture and expulsion.
