Acadian Resistance

*The Acadians in history books and film are often portrayed as passive individuals that bent to the will of the British during the many years of fighting over Acadia.

This is not necessarily the case for at the start of the Great Expulsion in 1755, many Acadians formed guerrilla bands in the forests, often linking up with their historic Mi'kmaq allies. This resulted in roving bands of dispossessed Acadians periodically attacking British fortifications and soldiers and then melting back into the forest.

A significant military action between an Acadian / Mi'kmaq force and British regulars occurred in 1757, four kilometers down the road in Carlton Corners, just outside of Bridgetown. Visit the historical site of Bloody Creek or click here for more info.
